Under no circumstances should you send original documents to Swansea at this stage in case of loss. Either way the first step is to obtain a dating certificate based on the frame number of your motorcycle. We need to see photos of both sides of the machine, and its frame and engine numbers, also the originals of any documentation you have to support the application.
Send these by registered post to us for authorised stamped copies, which DVLA will accept.

Most older Sturmey-Archer hubs have two or three-letter model codes, which are usually stamped onto the hub shell. Besides detailing the bike’s engine and frame number, the decal will show the makers, the model and year of manufacture. However, the model information can be confusing as machines offered for sale after September in the United States will technically be the following year’s model.
The location of Triumph frame numbers is unique – stamped on the top of the bottom so we must use other means to date them, eg their Sturmey-Archer gears.
Each engine number is unique, that is to say one numbering sequence ran through all models. In other words, engine number might be a 5T, might be a 6S. In this way engine numbers progressed at a faster rate than frame numbers as lightweight models used a different frame but were included in the engine numbering sequence. A ‘C’ suffix to the engine number denotes combination sidecar , indicating a lower geared drive sprocket fitted.
